MOZILLA BRAND

The Mozilla brand redesign was a non-traditional brand identity refresh. Traditional branding projects keep everything secret and do a big unveiling where everything is all ready to go — font, logo, templates, business cards, etc. Because of our open source roots, we revealed our brand identity design in the open, documenting our process and development via the Mozilla blog, listening to users along the way, and sharing the logo and brand elements with our community as soon as they were complete.

In partnership with Johnson Banks for the identity redesign and Typotheque for font development, we took these core organizing principles in-house to further flush out the design system and incorporate them into our product & marketing materials. I supported the development and rollout of type hierarchy and color palettes, along with the development of glyphs, icons, and Protocol, a design component library for Mozilla branded websites, allowing us to scale our web presence quickly and maintain the open source ethos throughout our work.

As part of the rollout, I identified and vetted several print shops to serve as our business card agency of record, and a local presentation design agency to develop Mozilla-branded presentation templates. I also partnered with The Green Eyl to develop video style guides and environmental designs for our Berlin and Mountain View offices, and with Staples to develop a kit of gear and swag items for our internal gear store.
